How to trim video on Mac without re-encoding
Choose the parts of a recording you want to keep, export compatible media without another encode, and understand where lossless cuts can land.
Explore QuickTrim for MacA recording can contain a few moments you want and a long stretch you do not. If you only need shorter files, exporting the footage through another video encode can be unnecessary. For compatible media, QuickTrim copies the retained compressed video and audio into separate playable extracts.
This is pass-through trimming: the image and sound are not compressed again. It can save the work of another encode, although reading, writing, and verifying the files still takes time. Final Cut Pro is not required for this file-and-folder workflow. QuickTrim requires macOS 26 or later.
Understand where a lossless cut can land
Some codecs store each frame independently. Others, including common H.264 and HEVC recordings, use groups of frames that depend on one another. A new file needs a decodable beginning; an arbitrary frame in the middle of a group may not provide one.
QuickTrim’s Safe edges can expand the selected range outward to suitable boundaries. You may retain a little footage before or after the moment you marked. That is the tradeoff for avoiding another encode. Check the actual result rather than assuming every marked boundary becomes a frame-exact cut.
1. Add files, a folder, or an SD card
Open QuickTrim and use Sources + → Video Files… or Folder or SD Card…. You can also drop files or folders into the workspace. Grant access when macOS asks, then let QuickTrim build the filmstrips.
Start with one representative recording. A .mov or .mp4 extension describes a container, not every codec or track inside it. Compatibility depends on the actual media, so resolve any messages about unsupported or unavailable sources before exporting.
2. Mark the moments you want to keep
Skim and play the recording, then draw a keep range over the useful portion. Add more ranges if you want several separate extracts from the same recording. Each keep range produces its own output file; the ranges are not automatically joined into one edited movie.
With Keep when nothing is selected enabled, untouched clips remain unchanged. They do not create imaginary savings. Review the whole plan rather than assuming an unmarked clip will disappear.
3. Check the boundaries and destination
Choose Review Plan. Check the retained ranges, Safe edges, destination, filenames, and estimated output size. Keep the default original-retention choice for your first export, and make sure the disk has room for both the source and the new extracts.
A very short source, a range expanded to nearly its full length, or many overlapping extracts may offer little storage benefit. Use the plan to decide whether the export is useful before running it.
4. Trim and verify the extracts
Start the trim and wait for QuickTrim’s output verification to finish. Open the resulting files and play their beginnings and endings. Check that the moments you wanted survived, the audio is present where expected, and the files work in the application where you intend to use them.
Compare the verified sizes rather than treating the original estimate as a guarantee. Speed and savings vary with the source, selected ranges, required boundaries, and the disks doing the work.
5. Decide what to do with the originals
Separate extracts do not free space while their originals remain on the same disk. After verification and a backup check, you can keep the originals, move them to another disk, or use an eligible replacement workflow that QuickTrim explicitly offers. Multiple extracts from a source are not the same as replacing that source with one shorter file.
Check whether other edits reference the original file before removing it. Retained undo copies and Trash can keep using disk space. For Final Cut media, follow the Final Cut source-media storage guide so the project references are handled as part of the workflow.
